What is coaching and how can it help?

Coaching is an extremely effective way to develop skills and maximise performance.

Coaching works by taking a positive approach to problem-solving and learning.  In this way negative, self-limiting beliefs are turned into positive action and results.

Our coaching is ‘Result-Focused’ – this means our whole focus is on delivering positive change – whether that’s for you, your team, or your business.

We believe that everyone holds the resources to achieve their goals and realise their potential.

Ever felt stuck or bogged down in a situation?  This is something everyone faces at some point in their personal or working life.

Your coach works with you to identify the blocks that are preventing you from moving forward and set out new goals and vision for the future.  They then support you to set out actions to make this a reality.

How can coaching help?

Examples of issues that benefit from coaching:

  • Developing leadership skills
  • Strategic development
  • Work-life balance
  • Stress Management
  • Transition to new roles
  • Managing change
  • Decision making
  • Time Management

  • Organisational re-development

Of course this list isn’t exhaustive and issues that can be addressed are unique to each individual or organisation.

What happens in a coaching session?

Your coach will work with you on a 1:1 basis in a private, confidential environment.

During your first coaching session you will set out a contract with your coach.  This is a very important stage where rules and parameters for the coaching sessions are set out, including confidentiality, frequency and duration of sessions and checking your understanding of coaching.  In this way we are able to establish whether coaching is the right approach for you.

This first session will also involve an exploration of what you want out of the coaching sessions and some background as to what led you there.

Coaching sessions usually take place every 2-6 weeks, depending on individual circumstances and a number of future sessions will be agreed in advance.  Of course, you are in control and this is always subject to review.

Each session will last around an hour for individual coaching and 90 minutes to 2 hours for executive and leadership coaching.

What can be expected from a coach?

Your coach will support you to set clear goals for improvement in whatever area you identify.  They will then use a variety of coaching tools and psychological approaches to help you gain clarity and focus to overcome any obstacles that may be holding you back from achieving those goals.

One of the main tools used by coaches is the use of questioning.  Whilst this may seem rather unremarkable to people who have not experienced coaching, the use of incisive questioning (or ‘killer questions’ as they are often referred to) brings a huge level of personal challenge and awareness raising for the person receiving coaching.  An example of an incisive question would be, ‘If you knew you couldn’t fail – what would you go do right now?’

Other tools and approaches include using decision making tools, scoring and self-assessments to track progress and various psychological approaches such as Transactional Analysis and positive psychology.

Your coach works with you as an equal partner to offer positive challenge, feedback and support through your journey towards your goals.  You remain in control of the sessions at all times and the agenda is always set by you.
